- By filler. The two main types are elastic foam and molded polyurethane foam.

By reclining mechanisms:
Gravity – a weight plate installed at the edge of the seat. After the occupant stands up, the chair returns to an upright position.
Mechanical – all movement of the seat to another position is performed by the occupant.
A spring-based mechanism attached to a monolithic base. The springs assist in returning the seat to its upright position.
On a common metal frame or framework – several seats are joined together under a single base using fewer supports and armrests.
